As Governor Okorocha promises jobs for tailors and setting up of garment Institute in Imo State

Governor Rochas Okorocha has promised that henceforth all school uniforms in Imo state would be sown by the state tailors with a view of creating mass jobs and enhancing local content in public spending. He also promised to establish in no distant time a garment institute in Imo State that will offer professional training courses in fashion design and garment technology. The Governor gave this commitment at the formal inauguration of IMO Tailors Association under the auspices of the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN), an affiliate of NLC. The historic event took place on Friday November 7^th at the prestigious world class Imo International Convention Centre, (IICC), at Owerri.
Governor Rochas Okorocha expressed appreciation to the leadership of the union for the inauguration of tailors in Imo State and promised to give the necessary support to the organized tailors.  He thanked the union for the award and recognition and said he will continue to partner with organized labour in his effort and commitment to promote the welfare of workers and create mass decent employment in Imo State.
As part of its organizing efforts, the National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) has successfully inaugurated the tailors in Imo State to its fold.  With the successful inauguration of Imo State tailors, they have automatically become members of the union like their counterparts in Rivers, Cross River, Edo, Lagos, Ogun, Benue, Kogi, Kebbi, Kaduna, Kano, Kwara, Katsina and Abuja among other States.  The venue of the inauguration, the Imo International Convention Centre (IICC) is one of the numerous projects executed by the administration of Governor Rochas Okorocha under the Imo Rescue Mission.
The ceremony was attended by the President of the Union, Comrade Oladele Hunsu and General Secretary, Comrade Issa Aremu, mni who is also the Vice President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Chairman IndustriALL Global Union, Africa Region.  Special Guest of Honour and host governor was His Excellency, Owelle Anayo, Rochas Okorocha OON, Governor of Imo State.  The Imo State Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere was represented at the occasion by his Private Secretary. The Chairman, Trade Union Congress (TUC), Imo State Comrade Akalazu Paul also attended.
While administering the oath of office to the newly inaugurated Executive Committee Members, the President of the Union, Comrade Oladele Hunsu welcome them to the union and urged them to be active members of the union.  He enumerated the benefits they stand to get by being members of the union and encouraged them to be worthy representatives of the Union in Imo State.  The General Secretary of the Union, and Vice President of Nigeria Labour Comrade Issa Aremu, mni observed that Governor Rochas’ policies are commendably popular and pro-labour and pro-poor. He said while some other governors are opposed to 18,000 minimum wage, Governor Rochas Okorocha pays N20,000.
The union formally presented a Good Governance award to the Governor and a birthday card. Earlier in her address, the Chairperson of Imo State Branch of the Union, Comrade Vivian N. Nwachi noted that the tailoring section as part of the informal sector remains the highest employer of labour in Imo State. She however lamented the neglect by the government.  She noted that the tailoring section has capacity to address the unemployment problem in the country through creation of mass decent jobs if well taken care.  She advocated for training and retraining of tailors to improve and acquire new skills as well as provision of modern machines and other equipment.  She thanked the leadership of the union for the successful inauguration and commended Governor Owelle Anayo Rochas Okorocha for gracing the occasion and in particular the promise to support the tailors in Imo State.
The newly inaugurated Executive Committee members are: Comrades Vivian N. Nwachi, Chairperson; Atobatele Ola, Secretary; Nkechi Aloysius, Treasurer; Maxwell Mbadingha, Vice Chairperson; Helen Osuji, Assistant Secretary; Ann Opara, Financial Secretary; Frank Peace Duruobi, Public Relation Officer; Ogechi Ofoegbu, Welfare Officer and Nma Kingsely, State Auditor.
The programme featured cultural dances, drama and fashion parade.
