NLC Delegates’ Conference

The 10th National Delegates’ Conference of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) took place from March 1st – 3rd, 2011 at Thisday Dome, Abuja. The conference with the theme “Building a New Nigeria: The Role of the Working Class towards National Transformation” was attended by about 1992 delegates drawn from NLC affiliate unions.

The opening ceremony was well attended by invited guests that includes His Excellency, President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by the Honourable Minister of Labout and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, Adams Oshiomhole, Comrade Governor of Edo State and past President of NLC, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, Executive Governor of Bayelsa State. Also at the opening were ast Presidents ang General Secretaries of NLC namely Alhaji Hassan Sumonu, Ali Ciroma, Pascal Bafyau, A. M. Dangiwa and A. M. Anigbo. Other onvited guests included Prof. Attahiru Jega, Chairman INEC, Barrister Dan Nwanyanwu, National Chairman Labour Party, Dipo Fashina, Co-Chairperson LASCO, the Registrar of Trade Unions, Mrs. N. Mbogu and Dr. John Olarenwaju, Director General MINILS among others.

The conference was declared open by His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan represented by the Honourable Minister of Labour and Productivity.

Motions

Motions moved, discussed and adopted covered issues as Labout and the National Economy, Labour and Energy, Labout, Democracy and Governance, Trade Union Issues, Health and Safety, HIV/AIDS, Gender and International.

Reports

The conference among other things took reports from the Credential Committee, Financial Report, External Auditors Report, Constitutional Review Committee and Motions Committee. There was a public lecture on the theme of the conference, “Building a New Nigeria: The Role of the Working Class towards National Transformation” delivered by Professor Omotoye Olorode.

NUTGTWN’s Participation

NUTGTWN actively participated at the just concluded Delegates’ Conference of Congress. Two officers of the union served in the committees set-up by the NLC. Comrades Issa Aremu and Aminu Suleiman served in the Motions Committee and Constitution Committee respectively. Comrade Issa Aremu was Chairperson Motions Committee. A total number of 36 delegates from NUTGTWN were at the conference while about 32 members of the union attended as observers.

Elections

The union’s General Secretary, Comrade Issa Aremu was re-elected as Vice President of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC). Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar of Nigerian Union of Teachers and Comrade Ayuba Wabba of Medical and Health Workers Union was returned unopposed as President and Treasurer respectively.
